A dental emergency can be a scary experience for most patients, especially when it occurs outside of normal business hours. Here are some important tips to remember and ways you can tell if your emergency needs to be addressed right away.
What constitutes a dental emergency?
- If you start experiencing dental pain, it is best to call us right away. Waiting is not a good plan since it can mean a lost tooth or more costly treatment in the long run. Call our office. If it is after hours, there will be instructions on how to reach the dentist.
- If you lose a restoration and you are not in pain, you can often wait until the next morning or next business day to call. Contact us as early as possible on the next business day so that we can treat you quickly.
- If your child loses a baby tooth prematurely due to an accident or play, we will likely not try to save the tooth. If parts of the tooth are still in your child’s mouth or if you think that other teeth are affected, call us immediately.
- If you lose an adult tooth from trauma, place the tooth gently back into the gums and hold it in place with gauze and contact our office. We will try to save your tooth! If you cannot place it back in the gums, put it in a small container of milk and bring it with you.
Anytime you are in severe pain, your emergency needs to be addressed right away. We will do our best to restore your health and comfort as soon as possible. Severe pain is an indication that you have a condition that requires dental attention immediately.
